A unique 911 Flachbau RS has been created by Porsche's Sonderwunsch division, a program that produces one-off factory cars. The project was commissioned by a European client and took approximately three years to develop, costing several million dollars.

The Flachbau RS is based on a 2018 911 GT2 RS and pays homage to the 935/78 "Moby Dick" racing car, which inspired the original Flachbau model produced between 1982 and 1989. The client wanted to maintain the original engine, a 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer biturbo with approximately 710 cv and 76.5 kgfm of torque.

The rest of the car was reinterpreted, including aerodynamics, bodywork, and interior design, combining historical references with modern solutions. Grant Larson, a veteran Porsche designer, was involved in the final design process before his retirement last year.

The front of the car features inclined fenders with openings, which required a new bumper, splitter, and extremely thin headlights. The Manthey team also contributed to the aerodynamic elements, including small front air dams and components installed under the body to control airflow.

The interior retains some of the red and black color scheme and carbon fiber trim from the GT2 RS, but has been stripped of multimedia and audio equipment. A compartment made of leather has been added to store small items, and insulation and noise reduction materials have been removed to expose metal and electrical components.

The rear wing, which can assume three different configurations, produces approximately 554 kg of downforce on the rear axle when the car reaches its top speed of around 340 km/h. The wing has been patented, indicating that its development went beyond a simple aesthetic adaptation inspired by historical models.

The development process included multiple prototypes, virtual simulations, wind tunnel testing, durability testing, and extensive evaluations of the rear wing's vibration. One of the development cars even completed 50 laps at the Nürburgring circuit.

The project demonstrates the extent to which Porsche is willing to go with its exclusive project program. However, the result is not a production 911 Flachbau, but rather a unique creation that showcases the company's capabilities in creating bespoke cars.
