August 2026 Classic Car Auction Sales Surge 60% to $755.6M
Monterey Car Week auctions in August 2026 generated a record $755.6 million, a 60% increase over the previous 2022 high, driven by multi-million-dollar

August 2026 classic car auction sales reached $755.6 million, a 60% increase over the previous record year of 2022. The astonishing result was driven by five auctions during Monterey Car Week, fueled by once-in-a-generation consignments and low-volume hypercars.
Top sales were dominated by modern hypercars and significant racing classics. A 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe sold for $42,905,000. A 2026 Ferrari Luce Tailor Made fetched $40,000,000. Other multi-million-dollar results included a 1996 McLaren F1 GTR, two 1963 models-a Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and a Ferrari 250 P-each achieving $18,705,000, and a 2023 Ferrari Daytona SP3 at $17,825,000. Ferrari models from the 1990s and 1980s also commanded eight-figure sums.

Market strength confirmed by Hagerty Rating
The Hagerty Market Rating rose to 58.74 in August 2026, a monthly increase of 0.14 points. This rating remains within the 50 to 60 range, which is considered 'flat market' territory. The gain reflects strong auction performance but suggests overall market conditions are not yet in a growth phase.
Broader trends show shifting buyer profile
Year-to-date sales through August 2026 totaled $4.9 billion. This represents the highest YTD figure since January 2026, confirming the auction market is having a banner year. The gains, however, are concentrated in highly affluent pockets. The typical enthusiast with a typical car is operating under different dynamics, with values often falling in real terms.
Auction inventory reflects newer classics
The median model year of vehicles offered at auction has shifted significantly newer. It rose to 1994 in the current year, up from 1991 the prior year. The volume share of vehicles built since 1990 increased from 53% to 56% year-over-year. More strikingly, the value share from post-1990 vehicles grew from 49% to 59%, indicating newer classics are capturing a larger portion of total spending.
Supporting the high-end surge, the global average sale price in August 2026 was up 31% year-over-year. The median sale price saw a more modest 5% increase. January 2026 was also noted as another big month for live auctions featuring top-shelf consignments. The market remains in 'flat' Hagerty Rating territory despite these monthly gains, suggesting caution amid record-breaking top-end sales.
