A matching-numbers 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429, one of 859 built that year, is set for auction. The car, restored in 2018, retains its original 375 bhp V8 engine and comes with extensive documentation.
A 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 with its original matching-numbers engine is scheduled for a Mecum auction in late September. This Wimbledon White example is one of only 859 produced for the 1969 model year.
Ford created the Boss 429 as a homologation special to qualify its new 429 cubic inch semi-hemispherical V8 for NASCAR competition. The car was not intended for mass production but to meet racing regulations requiring a street-legal version. Specialist contractor Kar-Kraft heavily modified the standard Mustang's front end to fit the massive engine, relocating the battery to the trunk and revising the suspension.
The Homologation Special
By the late 1960s, Ford needed a weapon to challenge Chrysler's dominant 426 Hemi on NASCAR ovals. The resulting Boss 429 V8 featured aluminum cylinder heads with crescent-shaped combustion chambers and high-flow ports. While officially rated at 375 horsepower, actual output was widely believed to be significantly higher. Every car left the factory with a 4-speed manual transmission and a 3.91 rear axle.
The "Boss" name originated with designer Larry Shinoda. When questioned about his secret project, he would joke it was "the boss's car," a reference to Ford president Bunkie Knudsen. The name stuck for both the Boss 302 and the larger-engined 429.
Production and Specifications
Production of the Boss 429 was extremely limited across its two-year lifespan. The cars were relatively understated externally, identified mainly by fender decals, a functional hood scoop, and Magnum 500 wheels.

The Car for Auction
This particular 1969 Boss 429 was delivered new through Jerry Alderman Ford Sales in Indianapolis. It is finished in Wimbledon White over a black Clarion knit vinyl interior. The car underwent a two-year concours restoration completed in 2018 by noted specialist Drew Alcazar.
The sale includes extensive provenance documentation. The original window sticker, build sheet, owner's manual, and a Deluxe Marti Report accompany the car. A full photographic record of the restoration and the original interior parts removed during the process are also part of the offering.
Rising insurance costs and tightening emissions regulations ended the Boss 429's run after 1970. With only 1,358 units built, well-preserved examples like this one are highly sought by collectors. The car remains a potent symbol of Ford's effort to win the horsepower wars on both the street and the track.
