Porsche 993 RS Speedster Built Via Sonderwunsch Program

A new, factory-backed Porsche 993 Speedster has been created, fulfilling a model variant the company never officially produced. Italian client Luca Trazzi commissioned the one-off car through Porsche's Sonderwunsch special request program, completing the project in 2024.

The car is a significant addition to a tiny group of fourth-generation 911 Speedsters. Porsche skipped the Speedster variant for both the original 911 and the 993 generation built from 1994 to 1998, only reviving it for the 997 in 2010. Despite this, a handful of special builds exist.

The Factory-Built 993 Speedsters

Only two or three 993-based Speedsters were built directly by Porsche in Zuffenhausen. The first was a dark green model from 1995, based on a 993 Carrera Cabriolet. It was a 60th birthday gift for Ferdinand Alexander "Butzi" Porsche, the original 911's designer and then supervisory board chairman, and used parts from the earlier 964 Speedster.

US comedian and Porsche enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld challenged that car's unique status. He sent his 1998 993 Carrera 4S Cabriolet to Porsche's Exclusive department to be converted into a Speedster. His silver car, however, received the wider body from the 993 Turbo.

Luca Trazzi's Sonderwunsch Creation

The latest entry is Luca Trazzi's project, which distinguishes itself mechanically and visually. The build is upgraded with a 3.8-liter engine sourced from a 993 Carrera RS. Visually, it stands out with a custom paint color named Otto Yellow after Trazzi's dog and features a characteristically lowered Speedster windshield.

A Hybrid Without Factory Approval

Separately, dealer Ni-Cola Classic Car Sales in Baden-Wuerttemberg is offering another 993-style Speedster for 689,990 euros. This car is described as a hybrid of the 964 and 993 generations but lacks official factory approval.

Its history began in 1991 as a purist 964 Carrera RS. After a crash in late 1993, development engineers from Porsche in Weissach are said to have rebuilt it. They repaired the body, removed the roof, and gave it a 993 appearance using original parts. The conversion, stiffened by a Matter roll cage and topped with a fixed Kevlar carbon hardtop by Strosek, received street-legal TÜV approval in spring 1994.

Further modifications followed over years. Aerodynamic refinements in 1996 included a GT2 front, a Turbo-style rear spoiler, and multi-piece Speedline wheels. Technical completion came in 2001 with the installation of a 3.8-liter flat-six engine and six-speed transmission from a 993 Carrera RS. With 400 newton-meters of torque, flared wheel arches, and a Cargraphic exhaust, this car demonstrates that an exciting Speedster history does not require an official factory certificate.
