Renault has unveiled the E-Space concept, a modern electric reinterpretation of its pioneering 1984 Espace minivan. The concept vehicle is set for its full presentation at the Paris Motor Show in Paris, France, on October 12, ahead of the show's public opening on October 13.

The E-Space is part of Renault's E-Tech electric vehicle lineup. The French automaker explained that "the letter 'E' directly represents the E-Tech range and, the 'Space,' the generous and comfortable internal space." Renault is positioning itself as a major host of the Paris event. The concept explores possible directions for development, though the company stressed it is currently only a design study and not a confirmed production model.

Design and features

The E-Space concept draws clear inspiration from the angular silhouette of the original Espace. It features a square body shape, an angular hood, and retains the model's signature large glass areas. This includes three side windows and a slanted additional spy window near the A-pillar, a hallmark of the first-generation car.

Almost 360-degree body glazing and a large glass roof continue the theme. The rear pillar wraps around the roof and is visually separated from the main body. Traditional components have been replaced with digital elements. LED strips take the place of headlights, and an illuminated Renault logo projects from the grille. The concept omits visible door handles and uses digital cameras instead of traditional side mirrors. It rides on large wheels paired with narrow tires.

Context and competition

The reveal signals Renault's broader retro-futuristic strategy, which involves reimagining past models with future-oriented design and electrification. Recent production models following this approach include the R4, R5, Twingo, and Gordini. The E-Space concept is positioned as a direct competitor to the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, with the two vehicles sharing nearly identical dimensions.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz4.71 m

A potential production version of the electric minivan could align with Renault's Futuready strategy. The company estimates such a model could arrive in approximately two years, though no commitment has been made.

Heritage and production outlook

The original Renault Espace was developed in cooperation with Matra and revolutionized the passenger car market. It could accommodate up to seven passengers thanks to innovations like removable rear seats and rotating front seats. The new E-Space concept is described as a future-oriented vision of that original model and its potential relaunch.

Renault has not yet released images of the E-Space's interior or any technical specifications. The company has not confirmed series production. Renault promises to disclose additional details during the presentation at the Paris Motor Show.
