Honda has unveiled the updated 2027 Civic Type R, celebrating 30 years of the Type R badge with aerodynamic, interior...

The 2027 Honda Civic Type R debuts in the U.S. Market in October 2026 with a starting price of $48,695. This is the first major update for the FL5 generation. American Honda Motor announced the changes, which focus on technical upgrades and cabin tweaks for enhanced track performance and daily comfort.

Exterior and aerodynamic changes

The update features a redesigned front bumper with a larger grille and deeper splitter to improve cooling and downforce, alongside a new Meteorite Gray Metallic exclusive colour. The larger grille opening and deeper front splitter are designed to reduce turbulence and increase airflow to the engine bay. This aims to prevent overheating during intensive track use. The aerodynamic revisions also deliver more front-end downforce for improved road holding.

The 2027 Civic Type R introduces a new exterior colour, Meteorite Gray Metallic (NH-904M), not offered on the current Type R in any other country. This shade was previously offered as Meteoroid Grey on the top-selling Honda CR-V SUV, as well as the Accord sedan and HR-V SUV in Australia.

Powertrain and drivetrain

The 2.0-liter turbocharged K20C engine produces 319 horsepower and is paired exclusively with a six-speed manual, now featuring faster rev-matching and recalibrated +R mode damping. The standard six-speed manual transmission benefits from an improved rev-matching system for faster engine responsiveness and smoother downshifts.

The active suspension damping was recalibrated specifically for the most aggressive '+R' driving mode. This retuned damper setting reduces bouncing and impact harshness, improving stability when the car is in its track-focused configuration. The engine also receives a new retro-inspired engine cover as a cosmetic addition.

Interior and technology upgrades

Inside, the Type R gains heated sport seats with new Ultrasuede perforation, a synthetic suede instrument panel finish, darkened aluminum shift knob, Google Built-in system, and dual USB-C ports. The front sport bucket seats now offer three-level heating for the first time. They feature a new perforation pattern in red Ultrasuede designed to improve ventilation, reduce occupant slippage during cornering, and lessen fatigue.

Cosmetic interior changes include a diamond-pattern trim with a black surround, black air-vent and climate control knobs, and Ultrasuede material fitted to the top of the instrument panel and front doors. The synthetic suede finish on the instrument panel upper section is intended to reduce windshield glare. The aluminum shifter knob is finished in a darker grey. As one report noted, "O pomo da alavanca de marchas em alumínio exibe um tom de cinza escurecido, combinando com os comandos do ar-condicionado." This darker finish also extends to the door handles and console trim.

Technology updates include Google Built-in, featuring Google Gemini, accessible via the 9.0-inch centre touchscreen. Two USB-C ports have been added to the centre console above the standard wireless phone charger. A new auto-dimming rearview mirror, already standard on the Australian Civic Type R, is included for U.S. Models.

Safety and availability

The updated model includes enhanced pedestrian and motorcycle detection, adaptive cruise control with natural responses, lane keeping assist recalibration, and post-collision braking, arriving at U.S. Dealerships in October 2026. The advanced safety package now detects pedestrians and motorcycles with greater accuracy. Adaptive cruise control has been refined for more natural acceleration and deceleration responses.

Lane keeping assist was recalibrated to better handle road surface irregularities. A new post-collision braking system is designed to help mitigate secondary damage in the event of an accident. The updated 2027 Honda Civic Type R arrives at U.S. Dealerships starting October 2026.
